Surigao del Sur is one of the destinations most international travelers haven't heard of, and that's exactly why we send people. The Enchanted River is the clearest river in the country, with water blue enough that you don't believe the photos. Tinuy-an Falls is wide and tiered and feels like something out of a different geography. The villages are small and the infrastructure is basic. This is the Philippines for travelers who want somewhere their friends haven't already been.

About this trip
This is a five-day trip into the eastern Mindanao coast, an area most international travelers fly over without realizing what's there. The two anchor sites are the Enchanted River and Tinuy-an Falls, both dramatic in different ways, and both a long drive from any major airport. You stay in basic but well-run accommodations near the sites. The trip suits travelers who want to be off the beaten path and don't need a luxury resort to enjoy a place.

Things Worth Knowing
The drives in Surigao are long. There is no airport close to the sites, and the road transfers are part of the trip.
The accommodation is basic. This is not a luxury destination and we are honest about that. The reason to come is the landscape, not the hotel.
The Enchanted River fish-feeding ritual happens daily at noon and the river is closed to swimmers during it. The timing is part of the day.
Some areas of Mindanao have travel advisories from foreign governments. Surigao del Sur is not currently affected, but we monitor the security situation and will notify travelers in advance of any changes.
Cancellations within ninety days of departure are not permitted. Rates are per person, based on double occupancy, and subject to change.
Where you stay
Surigao del Sur has limited accommodation. The options are small inns and resorts near the sites themselves, rather than in any major town. They are clean, comfortable, and basic. Travelers expecting full-service resorts should choose another destination.
Arrival
Pickup at Butuan or Davao airport, with a long drive to Hinatuan or Bislig — between three and five hours depending on the airport. Check-in at your accommodation. Quiet first evening.
Enchanted River
The full day is at the Enchanted River, a deep spring of water so blue it looks artificial. The local rule is no swimming during the daily fish-feeding ritual at noon, and the experience is best either before or after. Lunch is served riverside. The afternoon is for swimming, walking the area, and watching the fish-feeding if you want.
Tinuy-an Falls
A drive to Tinuy-an Falls, a wide, tiered waterfall that runs about ninety meters across. The site has a raft that takes you closer to the falls. Lunch at a local restaurant. Afternoon at Britania Group of Islands, a chain of small white-sand islets. Back to your hotel.
Cantilan or quiet day
The day is open. Some travelers want to drive further north to Cantilan for a quieter beach. Others want to spend the day at the resort. We arrange whichever side of this you prefer.
Departure
Long road transfer back to Butuan or Davao for the flight onward.
